PNR Status

Travel industry across the world depends on unique number that is PNR. Passenger Name Record was first introduced in airways and later absorbed in almost all travel means in the world.

Railways also introduced PNR Number system to facilitate the passenger reservation status. PNR Number actually helps Indian railways to prepare the reservation charts and uniquely identify the passengers. Passengers can check their reservation status (pnr status) through their unique 10 digit PNR number allotted when booking their journey ticket.

Charting will be done at least 4hrs prior to the schedule departure of the train at origination station. But it is very rare that the chart get’s prepared 4 hrs prior, in reality charts have been getting prepared 1 or 2 hrs prior to the actual departure of the train. Due to the delay in chart preparation passengers who are in waiting list have no time to reach the railways station as it take normally 1-2 hrs to reach railway station in present city traffic conditions.

Passengers have to be careful about their details provided while booking train tickets. Your personal information could be stolen as they were publicly pasted on rail coaches after chart preparation. DON’T mention your PAN card as ID proof while booking train tickets.

An Incident :

“To accommodate high net worth customers, traders have an easy source of benami PAN numbers, name, sex and age from reserved railway compartments. A traveller recently noticed a chap copying PAN particulars along with name, age and sex pasted on reserved compartments, and when confronted with the help of railway police, he admitted that he gets Rs 10 per PAN particulars from jewelers.

This wrong usage of a PAN number is known only to the regular tax payers, who regularly check their tax credit on form 26 AS provided by the Income Tax department on their website. This form 26 AS is updated only on filing of e-TDS returns by the traders. There is almost 6-12 months time delay for the PAN holder to know that a transaction of above nature has taken place on his name and that too only if he goes through form 26 AS. On noticing the tax credit of above nature while reconciling form 26 AS for tax credits for filing the return during subsequent financial year i.e. July / September, the tax payer has an option to exclude the same and go ahead in filing the return. In that case the department will first initiate action from the tax payer's side asking him to explain the sources of money for the above transaction done in his name and also to prove that he has not carried on the above transaction. The onus lies on the genuine tax payer for the fault committed by the traders. This dispute may even take more than 2 years to be settled.

In conclusion, the only way to protect yourself from these fraudulent transactions, is to avoid quoting PAN details for identity proof.”

Tatkal scheme has under gone immense changes recent time to prevent agents from booking fake tickets and creating huge demand for Tatkal tickets. Tatkal tickets can only be booked 1 Day prior to the journey date. But passengers have to be careful about trains travelling long distances. Long distance trains usually reaches your boarding station after 2 or 3 days, Hence Tatkal ticket has to be booked accordingly. Earlier Tatkal tickets can be booked 2 days in advance but not it’s reduced to 1 day. Also Tatkal ticket bookings open at 10 AM instead of 8 AM. New Tatkal timings have come into force from 10 July 2012.

Airline PNR Status

The airline Passenger Name Record (PNR) is generated by the airlines for journey booked by passenger. This PNR number gets stored in the reservation and departure control databases of airlines. The number of fields of information in PNR system varies from airline to airline and it may extend up to 60 fields and sub-fields.

PNR allows each passenger to access the relevant information regarding his/her departure and return flights, connecting flights (if any), or any other special services needed on boarding the flight, etc.

Most of the airlines and travel agencies across the world host their PNR databases on Computer Reservations System (CRS) or with Global Distribution System (GDS) companies such as Worldspan,Amadeus, Sabre, and Galileo.
